The site of David Sztybel, PhD

On some positions, Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' And Vanity comes along and asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But Conscience asks the question 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right.

David Sztybel PhD, obtained his doctorate in animal rights ethics from the University of Toronto's Department of Philosophy in 2000. After running that Department's essay writing clinic for a year, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Queen's University in 2001-2002, focused on the ethics of anti-vivisection. He also lectured for two years in the Sociology Department at Brock University. Areas of research interest are wide-ranging, and include: animal rights, ethical theory, ahimsa, the feminist ethic of care, legislative tactics and movement strategy, socialist theory, environmental ethics, normative sociology, epistemology, and the philosophy of religion. He has been a vegan animal rights activist since 1987. Sztybel was co-founder and organizer with University of Toronto Students for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and long-time activist with groups including Canadian Vegans for Animal Rights, ARK II, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Animal Alliance of Canada, Freedom for Animals, Toronto Animal Rights Society, the Toronto Vegetarian Association, the Toronto Veggie Pride Parade, and Toronto Pig Save. In recent years, he has shifted from strong grassroots activism to more emphasis on ideas-roots activism. Currently, he works in Toronto as a teacher, author, and occasional public speaker. Dr. Sztybel also attained a B. Ed. Degree in 2006 from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and is pleased to have made various contributions to public teaching. He belonged for several years to the Fellowship program of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, but left in 2011, only to begin a research fellowship at the University of Vienna.

Layout of this site

There are chiefly two domains to be found on this site: one for people who wish to read general audience materials, and another for those who would not mind getting their scholarly feet wet. May you find the time you invest in investigating this site personally rewarding, and may it also benefit anyone to whom you may be linked by invisible forces of oppression (e.g., through commerce in animal products).

Additionally, there is a media section, a collection of talks for presentation and a variety of very interesting links.

Peace be with you.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does.
